Issues

The Office of Government Affairs deals with a wide range of legislative issues relating to our core mission,  including: advocacy for basic scientific research, and social science and humanities research; federal financial aid to help ensure that low-income students can attend college; graduate education; higher education policy; tax policy and legislation and policy relating to immigration.

Government policies have an impact on universities in ways that go well beyond funding.  Universities are subject to a large number of federal regulations; some of our work involves trying to shape these regulations in sensible ways for a university environment. The government provides incentives for charitable giving, and its immigration laws and policies can have a major impact on the University's ability to attract students and scholars from around the world and to expand the University's international reach.
